Rev. Andrew Tolan
In 1956 Fr. Tolan was ordained to the priesthood and sent to St. Pius X, Drumchapel before coming to St. Paul's on Friday 12th February 1960, as one of Fr. Conlon's Assistants. While with us, he took an active interest in the youth of the parish, visiting the schools frequently and promoting the Youth Club by introducing different activities, such as badminton. The Altar Boys were one of the groups he looked after, teaching them Latin and encouraging them to help one another with the responses to the Mass and many other of the services taking place in the church at that time. His affinity with the youth of the parish showed itself when he accompanied the Altar Boys to the Kelvin Hall for the Christmas Carnival. Surely this man having lots of fun could not be a priest!
The area of the parish which was placed under his attention was Springboig and he made regular visits to the people of this part of the parish. With the help and hard work of many of the parishioners he started the Boundary Club, as a means of helping those on their own in the parish.
In 1974, Archbishop Winning was anxious to extend the work of the Catholic Marriage Advisory Council in the diocese and invited Fr.Tolan to a meeting to discuss the work of this group, and to become a priest advisor to the group.
Fr. Tolan was appointed Assistant Priest to Fr. McKeown in St. Brendan's, Yoker on Friday 11th October, 1974. Again his involvement with the youth led to his appointment in October, 1977 as Chaplain to St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School.
Fr. Tolan became Parish Priest of St. Lucy', Cumbernauld, before being appointed by Cardinal Winning to the office of Parish Priest of St. Dominic's, Bishopbriggs, replacing Fr. Christopher Gilfedder on Friday 29th September, 1995. |
